Grants For Real Estate

Federal and select private funding opportunities afford communities, townships, state and local governments and in rare specific cases, individuals to either reclaim, build or rebuild, or expand lands, dwellings and businesses serving the greater public need in the form of real estate grants.

Good old Uncle Sam, the federal government invests more money in this arena than do private foundations. The federal government supplies millions upon millions of dollars earmarked as grants for real estate, which are made available to all qualified townships, organizations, businesses and in some rare cases, individuals. Over twenty billion dollars total funding has been made available under the American Recovery Act proclamation and qualified entities and individuals are eligible to receive federal government real estate grants to fund:

  • Airport Improvement Programs. Over three billion dollars in federal real estategrants have been allotted to this program alone to modernize and expand national

    airport revitalization.

  • Community Development Block and Real Estate Grants. These real estate grants are available to recipients who undertake neighborhood revitalization and economic development initiates.
  • Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. This federally funded program has earmarked over one hundred million dollars in real estate grants to provide mass shelters, emergency food supplementation emergency mortgage and utility assistance.
  • Farm Labor Home and Housing Real Estate Grants. These grants may be used for construction, repair, or purchase of year-round or seasonal housing. These real estate grants can also be used for acquiring the necessary land and making improvements on land for housing and developing related support facilities including central cooking and dining facilities.
  • Healthy Home Demonstration Grants. Sponsored by HUD, these real estate grants are designated to develop, demonstrate, and promote cost-effective, preventive measures to correct multiple safety and health hazards in the home environment in children of low-income families.
  • The Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Real Estate Grants Program. Over forty nine million dollars has been allocated inside this federal real estate grants program to assist with temporary relocations and interim control of lead-based hazards in eligible privately owned homes, units and multifamily buildings that are occupied by low-income families.
  • The Self Help Home Ownership Opportunity Program. This real estate grantsopportunity affords home ownership opportunities through the provision of

    self-help housing where the homebuyer contributes a significant amount of sweat

    equity toward the construction of the dwellings.

  • Supportive Housing for the Elderly Real Estate Grants. This federal money is awarded for the acquisition of structures to provide supportive housing for theelderly, including the cost of real property acquisition, site improvement, conversion, demolition, relocation and other expenses of supportive housing for

    the elderly. Project rental assistance is also available for elderly individuals who qualify.

While less frequent, there are some private foundations which offer real estate grants. Some of the more prolific awarding foundations are:

  • The Mitte Foundation. The Mitte Foundation offers small-sum real estate grants for 501-C-3 organizations and select qualified individuals within a geographicconstraint in the state of Texas.
  • The Sobrato family Foundation. The Sobrato Family Foundation provides unrestricted general operating support, in-kind office and meeting space real estate grants, and affordable housing loans.

As you can see, the federal government invests much more money in this arena than do private foundations.
