Addressing disabilities within the American population are among the least federally funded grant vehicles for those seeking disability grants. More often than not, individuals seeking disabled grants experience much more success with local and regional charities. While the federal government provides aid to those with disabilities, more corporate and private foundations provide grant assistance to people seeking disability grants.

Within the federal government, the Department of Health and Human Services is charged with managing the money allotted for the nation’s health and social welfare. The Department of Health and Human Services has shifted its focus to research, opposed to assistance for those seeking disabled grants. Another federal branch, National Council on Disability has been all but forced to shut its doors due to federal budget cuts and lack of funding. Outside of government benefits, where does that leave those in need seeking disability grants? Let’s take a look at corporate and private foundations.

One of the more prolific foundations making grants to organizations that help with disabled grants is The Dr. Scholl Foundation.  The Dr. Scholl Foundation is a private,
independent, grant making foundation created from the Scholl Manufacturing Company.  The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation provides disability grants to Girls Scouts with disabilities and more. The Safeway Foundation supports nonprofit organizations whose mission is aligned inside the areas of hunger relief, education, health and human services and assisting organizations with grants for the disabled. The Readers Digest Partners for Sight Foundation helps assists organizations who work to get the visually impaired disabled grants.

Private foundations are a viable and often times successful alternative for organizations seeking disability grants. The Jerome S. & Grace H. Murray Foundation provides substantial funding for the care, training and education of people with disabilities and the training and education of those who will provide education, and training for people with disabilities. The Kessler Foundation is a public charity providing disability grants to
organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people with physical and cognitive disabilities caused by stroke, multiple sclerosis, injuries to the brain and spinal cord, and other chronic conditions.

One of the few foundations to make disabled grants directly to individuals is the Blanche Fischer Foundation. They provide disability grants for individuals within the state of Oregon who meet their criterion. The Foundations for Independent Living Centers is a nationally distributed, state allotted disabled grants organization which provides services to maximize the independence of individuals with disabilities and the accessibility of the communities they live in.

While few and far between, there is funding available to individuals seeking disabled grants. Federal grants for the disabled are many times awarded to state organizations that in turn pass funding along to qualified applicants. Private and corporate foundations still remain the best choice for both individuals and organizations seeking funding for disability grants.
